Outbreak of Salmonella in Eggs Spreads Like Runny Yolk

CQ HealthBeat (8/21, Norman) reported, “A widespread recall grew even larger on Friday as a second Iowa farm recalled eggs potentially contaminated with salmonella and became part of a Food and Drug Administration investigation.” Notably, “Hillandale Farms of Iowa issued a voluntary recall of an unspecified number of eggs that had been sent to grocery stores, grocery distribution centers and food service companies in 14 states.”

NPR (8/21) reported, “Iowa’s Hillandale Farms said Friday it was recalling more than 170 million eggs after laboratory tests confirmed salmonella. The company did not say if its action was connected to the recall by Wright County Egg, another Iowa farm that recalled 380 million eggs earlier this week,” but “FDA spokeswoman Pat El-Hinnawy said the two recalls are related. The strain of salmonella bacteria causing the poisoning is the same in both cases, salmonella enteritidis.”

The Christian Science Monitor (8/23, Knickerbocker) reports that “the recall so far involves eggs distributed to 14 states: Arkansas, California, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. The egg recall brands include: Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, and Sunny Meadow in a variety of packages, including in 6-egg, 12-egg, 18-egg, and 30-egg cartons as well as five-dozen cases.” Experts say that the FDA “investigation is likely to take months.”

Companies to face probes, lawsuits. USA Today (8/23, Weise) also reports, “The companies at the center of a widening recall of eggs that may be contaminated with salmonella head into this week facing new lawsuits and more scrutiny over a reported history of legal and regulatory violations.”

The National Law Journal (8/23, Qualters) reports, “Seattle food illness plaintiffs law firm Marler Clark filed what it believes is the first lawsuit linked to the nationwide recall of 380 million eggs. The firm initially filed Dzinovic v. L&K Tricoli LCC in Wisconsin’s Kenosha County Circuit court on July 22 against Baker Street Restaurant and Pub, which is K&L’s business name. On Aug. 18, the firm amended the complaint to add Wright County Egg, a Galt, Iowa, egg producer linked to the salmonella outbreak.” Marler “said the firm is investigating salmonella outbreaks linked to restaurants in various states, but the cause of the illnesses wasn’t clear until last week’s egg recall.” The Wall Street Journal (8/23, Martin) also covers the story.
