Does the US Government have a moral obligation to provide universal health care?

The long-standing debate on universal health care continues in our Nation, as Obama faces doctor groups and insurance lobbyists that vehemently oppose health care reform.

The US health care system is #37 on the World Health Organization (WHO) list, following Columbia, Chile and Costa Rica.  Aside from the nitty-gritty details of any proposed legislation, in the bigger-picture, does the US owe its people a duty to provide universal health care?

With equal access to health care, diabetes, mental problems, infections and cancers could be detected early and properly treated, increasing chances of survival, enjoyment of life and productivity while decreasing long-term health care costs.

What country does not want healthy, happy productive people?
